Maths

At Oberon Primary School, our Maths program is designed to help every child feel confident, capable and genuinely engaged in their learning. We aim to balance clear routines and explicit teaching with opportunities for curiosity and exploration.

Lessons begin with a warm-up that revisits key ideas and reconnects students with their previous learning, helping them ease into mathematical thinking. When new concepts are introduced, teachers use explicit teaching and guided practice so students understand what they are learning and how to approach it. As confidence grows, independence is gradually increased, with teachers encouraging students to apply their skills in broader, more open-ended ways.

Students engage in a range of learning experiences using hands-on materials, visual models, games, technology and real-world contexts. As new learning is consolidated, tasks often include opportunities for exploration and problem-solving, allowing children to demonstrate their understanding in multiple ways. Teachers check in regularly, offer feedback and adjust lessons to support or extend learners.
Reflection is an important part of our classrooms. Students are encouraged to share their thinking, discuss strategies and notice the progress they are making. We celebrate those moments of insight, when a student explains an idea clearly, tries a new strategy with confidence or realises they can do something that once felt tricky. These experiences help students build strong mathematical language, deepen their understanding and, most importantly, begin to see themselves as mathematicians.
